ROBERT FLEURY : les grands contrebandiers [The Great Smugglers]

Jump to full article: La Presse, 2008-08-02
Author: ROBERT FLEURY

Intro:

It is happy that our governments send the good message: no one cannot be above the law, not even of manufacturing large companies. However, there N ’ is nothing amusing to think qu ’ they contributed certainly to develop the market of the smuggling of cigarettes.

Worse, they fed from the criminal organizations whose activities thus became more flourishing. . . .

For Quebec, these compensations of 210 million $ are a mean consolation. It had failed to recover tax losses of 440 million $ on behalf of JTI-MacDonald — on a total complaint of 1,4 billion $ —, the company S ’ being placed under the protection of the Law on arrangements with the creditors! Its leaders make however vis-a-vis criminal charges!

We recall which was the social context in 1989. . . .

It is at the very least shocking to carry out that the shareholders S ’ draw some on also good account. Aren't they those which it crime benefitted? Indeed, the value of their actions N ’ did not cease D ’ increasing these last years …

Thus, Philip Morris awaited the conclusion of the charges which hung on RBH to offer D ’ to buy remaining actions qu ’ it did not have yet (60%) by making an offer higher than the market of 16,9%. . . .

One can also S ’ question on the part played by certain persons in charge D ’ Imperial Tobacco and of RBH.

Linda Buchanan, 58, landed beside a 750-volt live rail which would have killed her if she had touched it but escaped with burns for which she was treated in hospital.

"I just feel I'm lucky to be alive," she said. "It could have been a lot worse than it is and I'm shocked by the whole experience."

She had asked the pair to stop smoking twice already this week when they began to verbally abuse her. She told them to "grow up".

One of the men then pushed her, causing her to topple backwards and fall onto the track.

Ban smoking from all WA cafe strips - lobbyist

Jump to full article: WAtoday.com.au (au), 2008-08-06

Intro:

In the wake of Perth City Council's decision last night to ban smoking in restaurant al fresco areas, a national anti-smoking group has urged other cafe strip councils to do the same.

"Perth is the big one, with 154 al fresco dining licences," director of the West Perth-based Australian Council on Smoking and Health, Stephen Hall, said.

"Now Subiaco and Vincent, with their major al fresco cafe strips, need to show what they're made of or be left in a cloud of smoke."

City of Perth councillors last night unanimously supported, in principle, a smoking ban in licensed al fresco dining areas

Groups rally against extended smoking ban in Dallas

Jump to full article: Dallas Morning News, 2008-08-06
Author: DAVE LEVINTHAL / The Dallas Morning News

Intro:

A coalition of tavern industry, limited government and smokers' rights advocates say they'll battle efforts under way by Dallas politicians and health organizations to expand the city's public smoking ban to bars and pool halls.

"It's a small group of people trying to have their utopia at our expense," said John Barton, manager of tobacco shop Up In Smoke, during a rally Tuesday at Dallas' Havana Social Club cigar and rum bar. "We're going to meet this head-on. What's happening here - this is socialism. This is communism."

Kathy Grant, a spokeswoman for the Amusement & Music Operators of Texas, called on the Dallas City Council to protect smokers' right to puff freely in "adult venues without children present."

Two other organizations - the Americans for Prosperity Foundation and Greater Dallas Bar & Tavern Coalition - also went on record opposing an expanded Dallas smoking ban, which today includes most public workplaces and restaurants.

Group representatives say that in coming weeks they intend to gather petition signatures, lobby City Council members and try to convince Dallas residents that current smoking laws strike a fair balance between smokers' and nonsmokers' interests.

LONDON (Reuters) - Police said a woman was lucky to escape with her life after being pushed onto train tracks following a row with two men about smoking.

The 58-year-old woman was walking along the London-bound platform at Farningham Road train station in Kent at about 7 a.m. when she became embroiled in an argument with the men, said to be in their early to mid 20s.

"It would appear the woman had spoken to the men about smoking earlier this week," said Detective Inspector Bob Richardson of British Transport Police.

"This morning when she was at the station, she was walking past the same men when one of them pushed her and she fell onto the track."

Smoking is likely to be banned in alfresco dining areas in Northbridge and the city within 12 months after Perth City Council voted tonight to give 'in principle' support to the plan.

The move, which local business owners had warned could send some restaurants to the wall, has put the State Government under renewed pressure to take the lead and introduce smoking bans in all alfresco dining areas across WA.

The ban could take effect from next July and apply to all outdoor eating venues on council-controlled land, such as footpaths and kerbs.
